Be Alert for Two Major Internet Threats before 2014 Brazil World Cup Festivities

2014-05-27

Cyber criminals are experts at finding international events that cause world wide excitement, and are very adept at using these events to find and entice potential victims. While the whole world awaits the beginning of the 2014 Brazil World Cup, cyber criminals are clearly unwillingto waste any time. Baidu Antivirus Security Center monitoring reports have shown that cyber criminals are taking advantage of global interest in the run up to the World Cup by increasing their use of two major threats: fake downloads (goal: to earn advertising fees) and Internet phishing threats (goal:to trick users into revealing credit card and other private information).

Fake Downloads Spread Through Internet Searches

The Baidu Antivirus Security Center has recently discovered a number of downloadable fake FIFA games, key generators, and hacking crack tools. Some websites, by means of refined FIFA related search keywords, induce users to visit carefully designed websites offering fake downloads, ultimately tricking users into downloading adware. This adware will typically install a great deal of unwanted software, which will cause browsers to run slowly, and can even display popup ads, Baidu Antivirus security experts said.

Phishing Attacks

World Cup related threats are not just limited to malware. The Baidu Antivirus Security Center believes that World Cup related phishing attacks are the greatest threat currently facing netizens. Baidu Antivirus security experts have observed various phishing websites related to World Cup promotions: these types of phishing attacks typically bait users by offering free tickets to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and/or prizes, such as cash or even cars. After users unknowingly click on a malicious link, they are required to enter their CPF, Visa credit card number and security code, and other private information. This allows the scammer to steal from their credit cards, leading to financial loss.

Baidu Antivirus security experts are warning users that World Cup related attacks will continue until the end of the games, so please be sure to enable your security software's network protection features to avoid infection by World Cup related viruses. Currently, Baidu Antivirus users can enable the anti-phishing feature, which will then intercept World Cup related phishing attacks. Baidu Antivirus security experts will also continue to focus on World Cup related threats in order to provide users with even better security features.
